A woman’s voice thundered from a loudspeaker, aggressive in tone and with purpose. We didn’t understand what she was saying, but as we approached Gwanghwamun Gate, a massive boulevard where all of Seoul’s largest protests are held, it was apparent what was happening. That day the womens Korean hockey team was playing which is comprised of both North & South players. The protest was aimed at the North’s participation and the South’s acceptance of them being there. US flags were joined with Korean ones, it was obvious that they supported The US’ position on the DPRK. Most of the protestors were of the older generation, i didn’t spot too many young people like myself. The crowd was passionate, angry and well organized. Hordes of police lined the area and plainsclothed officers with radios monitored the crowd, it was like watching a stormchasers follow a tornado. What i’ve learned from being on both sides of the peninsula is that the Korean people are very emotional and passionate about anything and everything that really matters to them.
